Dear Dr. Watson,
The card that holds this letter doesn’t begin to convey enough what I need to say regarding my surgery and care from you. I decided to insert it in the card and make every effort to be brief. I know you are too busy for nonsense.
I have this year, what I consider the best Christmas present I have ever received. A doctor who with great expertise and a heart, gave me not only my foot back, but a wonderful chance at a brand new quality of life I have never known. I have been trying to write this, and having been taught very young to never ever impose, it has been difficult to tell this story of gratitude, and yet try and be brief.
My head says that, but the heart says you deserve more than just a card that says, “Hey Thanks!!!” Doesn’t quite seem enough. I wanted to tell you what this means. I still can’t quite sift what has happened and am so excited to just go buy a pair of new shoes that I can wear and walk in, or drive my VW, or walk into a store without crutches. My imagination is wild with all the adventures awaiting. I am 68 years old, how I wish I had known this was possible during the best job I ever had (Boeing, where I made the best salary too to raise my family), I cannot look backward, instead look forward to whatever time I have of my life and make the very best of it. And that is what you gave me.
I will continue to volunteer at Sunrise Children’s and St. Jude’s Ranch teaching sick kids to read, sew and to give them hope and value to their lives, but won’t they be surprised to see me come in without my crutches, or a scooter? I cannot wait for the big grin on my face when I begin again as soon as I am able after the first of the year.
All in all, this letter was intended to thank you, thank you so much for this new life. I know I have never felt such awe, such a feeling of renewal, in all my life. I hope I made sense without too much verbiage, and I so appreciate everything, right down to reading this.
Merry Christmas dear Dr. Watson, to and Mrs. Watson, your family, and a very Happy New Year. My heart will always be grateful.
